SCIENTIFIC CERTIFICATION SYSTEMS FACT SHEET
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) is an international
third-party evaluation and certification organization. SCS certifies the accuracy of
specific claims in a wide variety of industries, including agriculture, forestry, energy,
and consumer products. Third-party certification and the accompanying label enables
companies meeting high standards to communicate those standards to industry and the
consuming public in a credible way.

Oakland, CA Founded: 1984 Programs: NutriClean's "No Detected Pesticide Residue"
certification - the nation's first third-party certification system for testing pesticide
residues in fresh produce.
- "Dock" Program - this program tests samples of incoming produce, both
domestically grown and imported, for grocery retailers, at their distribution dock, to
insure that pesticide levels are within governmental tolerances.
- Food Safety Management Program - assists all segments of food production chain, from
grower to processor, distributor and retailer, to develop and implement site-specific food
safety management procedures. Certification indicates that a facility meets or exceeds
applicable local food safety and sanitation-related governmental regulations in addition
to the requirements set forth in the Standards. Safe and sanitary practices are
maintained, monitored and documented.
- Environmental Claims Certification - a program that provides independent verification of
the accuracy of environmental claims appearing on products and packaging.
- Forest Conservation Program - identifies forest management practices which successfully
sustain timber resources while maintaining the ecological viability of the forest and
benefiting the surrounding community.
- Life Cycle Assessment - "cradle-to-grave" assessment that assists companies in
determining the environmental impact of existing operations, implementing improvement
strategies and documenting environmental achievements.
- Life Cycle Stressor-Effects Assessment - merges the "cradle-to-grave" breadth
of traditional life cycle inventory practice with the site-specific depth of sophisticated
environmental impact and risk assessment.
Environmental Workplace Analysis - designed to educate employees about the environmental
consequences
of their actions, and to assist employees make the best environmental decisions on the
job.
